Creating A Character...
To begin with, you need to create a character. You can choose characters from the series, your own original characters, or semi-original characters, who might be related to someone in the show for example.
Once you've set out the main details of your character, you need to post an application in the applications thread. Include details like name, age, family (if applicable), their abilities etc. Also include details about appearance and personality - remember that all characters have good points and bad points. The most important rule with an RPG is to keep things as realistic as possible. An unrealistic character is no fun for anyone.
If we think that your character is unrealistic or should not be allowed for some reason, then the character won't be approved, and we'll usually give a reason why. Most characters will probably be approved though.
This includes powers. It's fine to give your character a power such as flight, telepathy etc, but you can't give your character God-like powers. Use your common sense, people. I know the writers seem to like giving the characters new powers on top of their current ones, but I think it'd be best if we kept it to a minimum.
Also, I might have to restrict powers if too many people want characters with the exact same abilities.
Regarding the powers of canon characters, I don't see any need to randomly add extra powers. If you really have a genuine reason for it, then you're free to ask, but I might say no.
Threads...
To start role playing, you need to create a thread. The title could be something relevant to what might happen in the thread, and be followed by the names of the characters invited in brackets.
For example, a thread might be called:
Sand Of Time (Bill, Ben)
Alternatively, a thread can be open for anyone to RP in.
Sand Of Time (Open)
Open threads can be limited to only a few characters after a while, and limited threads can be opened up at any time too. Just modify the first post to change the title.
If you forget to add any brackets after the title of your thread, that thread will be modified to be (Open). You are free to modify this again and change it.
When you've finished with a thread, modify the title to indicate that the thread is closed. This way we can move it to the old threads section and keep the boards tidy. Any kind of indication is okay, for example:
Sand Of Time (Closed)
Sand Of Time (Bill, Ben) CLOSED
Rules
The most important rule is to be realistic, and all other rules come down to this.
No Mary Sues. A Mary Sue is a character that always gets everything, that everyone loves, that always gets the girl or guy, that is perfect in practically every way. And also incredibly unrealistic and annoying for the rest of us. Alternatively, a mary sue (note the lack of capital letters) is a character that is always moaning, that everything bad happens to, and that everyone around them should somehow feel sorry for. Again, unrealistic and annoying. Have a bit of common sense, don't do it.
This also relates back to the 'no crazy powers' rule.
Also no characters that defy the boundaries of the universe. Sure, they all have crazy powers. But they are still human. So, no vampires, no werewolves, no demons, nothing like that.
No godmoding. This is when you try to manipulate another person's character. e.g.
Bill walked up to Ben and gave him a ferocious look followed by a blow to the stomach.
This is fine.
Bill walked up to Ben and gave him a ferocious look followed by a blow to the stomach, making Ben collapse to the floor. He laughed as Ben cried like a baby.
This is quite obviously not. I mean, how annoyed would you be if Ben was your character?
At some point, your characters may get into conflict. This may result in a fight, and it may result in powers being used. Try and avoid this as much as possible, but if it does happen then keep to the boundaries of your character's powers and don't do anything permenent. For example, if you play Meredith, you can't have her setting anybody on fire or burning down the forest. So powers can be used against each other, but keep it safe!
Another seemingly obvious thing is that you can't RP with yourself. If anybody wants to have more than one character, which is allowed, then make sure that they won't come into contact with each other that often.
Please use good grammar and spelling and try to set things out properly. I'm a bit of a grammar nazi, but this really is necessary. Use paragraphs to seperate thoughts and action from dialogue. And always, always stay in character. If you want to discuss what's going on in the thread, do it by PMing or by MSN or something to discuss it.
All threads that haven't been posted in for a few weeks will be automatically moved to the Old Threads board. If there is a reason they haven't been posted in, e.g. someone is on holiday or has exams etc., then you can have a few more weeks to post. Eventually, threads will be moved regardless of excuses.
