Giving just a glance when Luke sat down at the table with him, Sylar found himself relaxing, actually enjoying the meal. The food wasn't that great, but what could be expected from cans? He was refusing to admit that it was nice to have the company. How long had it been since someone had shared a meal with him?
Sylar justified it to himself that maybe the kid could be useful somehow, and if not, he could always kill him. Taking a sip of his tea, he licked his bottom lip and turned to the boy again, "I've been all over this island. There really isn't a way off." he said, wanting to see Luke's reaction.

Luke nodded, chewing and swallowing. The government had thought of everything. But he hadn't really seen it as a bad thing so far.
"But is that really such a terrible thing." he ventured tentatively.
After all, he'd never got on well with anybody normal.

Giving Luke a silent stare for a moment, Sylar set down his fork. "Not such a bad thing." he said, feeling intense fury sweep through him. "Did you not listen to anything I said to you? We're in a concentration camp, Luke. What if they drop a bomb on us once they've got us all here?" he said, suddenly not as hungry. He wanted this kid to get emotional...so far he's really only seen cocky insolence. Luke hadn't even had the sense to be scared of him.

"No, but... what if we'd stayed? We might have had to be on the run, and people trying to kill us everyday, and at least this way, we're safe..." he tried to explain.
And that wasn't even going into how it felt good to actually be part of a society which might understand him.

It seemed like, unlike Sylar, Luke actually wanted to belong somewhere, be normal. It was the polar opposite of what Sylar had fought and killed for. "Just because everyone here has abilities does not make this any sort of normal community." He said, wishing that the kid would just accept that he wasn't normal. "Being here isn't going to take away your sad childhood." He added, guessing that that might be a bard that would hurt. Luke acted like he'd been abused in at least some way, if the way he had reacted to the electric shocks was any indication.

"Huh." How had Gabriel guessed that? Oh, right. "Is that your working out how things work power?" he asked warily, touching his temples.
He didn't like that idea. He didn't want people inside his head.
"You've never tried to be around other people like you. People with abilities, us. We're better off together than with them. They'd never understand us."

"Luke, it doesn't take any power to see that you're a little broken." he said, shrugging, Sylar looked at the younger one, realizing he was finally getting to him a little. "You knew I was going to hurt you and you just took it. Come on, what kind of kid does that? One that's used to it." he muttered.
"You'd probably let me do a lot worse, huh?" he added, feeling oddly powerful in a way he wasn't used to.

"It was my Dad." he volunteered after a moment "Well, it was her fault, too... parents suck. They never understand, they didn't care..." He caught himself mid-ramble, looking at Gabriel. "I could... yeah. Doesn't mean I want you to." he said hastily. He didn't want Gabriel to think he got off on being hurt. "And I'm not broken." he finished defensively, squaring his shoulders and scowling. "I don't need them, don't need anybody."

Sylar listened, keeping his mouth shut for a while. That was the right attitude, he wanted to encourage that, but didn't realize he was putting himself into the awkward position of mentor.
"You're right. You don't need anyone...so why are you so eager to be stuck here with 'others like you'?" he asked, cocking a brow. "Think about it. Would they have given you the time of day in the real world? What makes you think they'd be different here?"

He paused a minute, trying to think of a smart way to order what was in his mind. "They're outsiders, like me, like us. Different. That's what we are. Special... better."
He frowned, swinging his arms to meet in front of his chest, clasping his hands and then letting them fall back to his sides.
"It's us against them. That's what the government've wanted all along, to seperate us off! So... we can fight back."

"Except that there's no way off this island that I can make out." Sylar said, heaving a sigh. Eventually he'd find a way, he'd determined to. But for the time being he was waiting it out, waiting for the next step.
"We need to know their game." he said, dropping his hands to his knees and rubbing the worn jeans. "Then we can plan ours." He wasn't sure when 'I' had become 'we', but he let it slide. "Until then I guess we have to play along." he frowned, pursing his lips.

"We need to get all of the others. Maybe. Like, an army." He glanced at the other man with sudden inspiration. "You could be Chief. No, not chief, like... Mayor. Or something. Of the island. You're the most powerful guy here, right? You can be in charge and organise what we're going to do."

Giving Luke a disbelieving stare, Sylar let out a quick chuckle. "That's...not going to work for me. I'm more of a loner." Sylar shrugged and stood, moving around closer to the other. "But you can run off and play leader if you want." he smirked, laying a hand on the back of the others neck.

He twitched slightly at the contact, frowning. "No. Nobody'd listen to me."
He didn't want that kind of responsibility anyway. Much as he'd hate to admit it, he functioned much better when he was being told what to do rather than setting the rules out for himself. But he was sure everybody would listen to Gabriel.

"why don't you just let them worry about it, then?" For all he cared, the others could mount their own war and get blown down by what ever the government had in reserve to deal with them. And when it was all over Sylar would creep out of his hiding place and make his escape.
Amused by the slight twitch he'd felt, Sylar went further, strokung his thumb across the others hair line, just to see what he would do.
